Project Background
Williston's Comprehensive Land Use and Transportation Plan was last updated 24 years ago, in 1984. A recent study of oil industry jobs
indicated that over 12,000 jobs could be added to the oil and natural gas industry in North Dakota. Many of these jobs will
attract residents to Williston, increasing the need for housing, recreation, and services.
A Comprehensive Land Use Plan Update will establish goals, objectives, and policies that guide the city in future decision-making
processes. The Plan will include a review of the city’s future public facility needs, opportunities for cooperation and
collaboration with other entities such as Williams County, and a review of zoning ordinances. In addition, a
Transportation Plan, including a traffic projection model, will
determine the level of projected traffic growth that will result from the
community’s population, household, and job growth. Based on this
information, the need for potential roadway and traffic control
improvements will be identified.
The citizens of Williston know their community best. Long-time residents understand the history of the community and can
explain why “things are the way they are”. New residents bring ideas from other places. A balance of these perspectives is
what makes public involvement such a valuable component of both land use and transportation planning. This website is part of the effort to keep citizens informed and involved throughout the planning process.
We encourage you to provide your insights and ideas, so that the final plan results in even more people who are proud to say
their Hometown is Williston, North Dakota, the Western Star.
